Thomas More's controversy with William TyndaleTyndale's New Testament translation, while more accurate than Luther's, adopted Luther's order for the books and some of Luther's notes,.

Because of this, Tyndale's work was connected to Lutheranism, which was held by English church authorities of the time to be the work of the devil. Copies began to reach England in March of 1526.

In October, the Bishop of London collected as many copies as he could and publicly burned them.

He even arranged to buy copies abroad, which he also burned, but the money went to Tyndale, who used it for the production of more copies.

Tyndale also took part in the ongoing theological debates, publishing several short tracts, which helped bring his work to the attention of Catholic clergy and scholars.

In 1528, the Bishop of London wrote to Sir Thomas More, requesting that he examine the works of certain "sons of iniquity" and explain "the crafty malignity of these impious heretics" to "simpleminded people."

He sent More examples of the Lutheran writers and gave him permission to read such books in order to lead an attack against them.

Tyndale was not mentioned in the letter, but his New Testament must have been among the books sent to More. Other tracts by Tyndale, published while More was working on his book, seem to have convinced him that Tyndale was the greatest danger among the Lutheran writers.

In 1529, Sir Thomas More launched an attack against the reformists, especially Luther and Tyndale, in a volume called A Dialogue Concerning Heresies. More's charges against Tyndale were broad.

While he took issue with specific words in Tyndale's translation ("congregation" instead of "church," "senior" instead of "priest," "repentance" instead of "penance," "love" instead of charity," for examples), he was more concerned with condemning Tyndale as a fraud, a hypocrite, a devil, a man "puffed up with pride and envy."

In 1530 More also took an active part in a church council that condemned Tyndale's works. Tyndale answered More in July of 1531 in An Answer to Sir Thomas More's Dialogue. In it Tyndale confirms More's worst fears by appealing to the scriptures as the ultimate authority to evaluate not only church doctrine but also church practice and by explicitly attacking the church hierarchy.

He also accused More of having traded his earlier humanist convictions for wealth and power. More replied a year later in a long work, The Confutation of Tyndale, in which he repeats and intensifies his attacks, advocates the burning of Tyndale's books, and prophesies that Tyndale will burn in hell for his sins.

He also supported the burning of heretics such as Tyndale: "and for heretics, as they be, the clergy doth denounce them; and, as they be well worthy, the temporality doth burn them; and after the fire of Smithfield hell doth receive them, where the wretches burn forever."

Many Lutheran scholars fled to the continent to avoid the persecution More described.

Tyndale, along with many Protestant-leaning scholars, resided in Antwerp, a free city, but surrounded by territory under control of Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor and a relative of Catherine of Aragon.

Early in 1535. Tyndale became friends with Henry Phillips, a visiting Englishman. Phillips presented himself to Tyndale as sympathetic to the Lutheran cause, but plotted with the emperor's magistrates to arrest Tyndale.

In May, 1535, Phillips invited Tyndale out to dinner and, upon leaving his residence, identified him to waiting guards who apprehended him. Although by this time, England had separated from the Catholic Church and Tyndale had some supporters in the government, the Church of England continued to fight against Lutheranism.

Tyndale's friends appealed to the English government to intervene, but to no avail. After a sixteen month imprisonment, an ecclesiastical panel convicted Tyndale of heresy in August, 1536 and turned him over to the secular authority.

In October of the same year he was executed, being first strangled and then burned at the stake.

4. They say our tongue is too rude. It is not so. Greek and Hebrew go more easily into English than into Latin. Has not God made the English tongue as well as others? They suffer you to read in English of Robin Hood, Bevis of Hampton, Hercules, Troilus, and a thousand ribald or filthy tales. It is only the Scripture that is forbidden. It is therefore clearer than the sun that this forbiddal is not “for love of your souls, which they care for as the fox doth for the geese.”

5. They say we need doctors to interpret Scripture [because] it is so hard… There are errors even in Origen and Augustine; how can we test them save by the Scripture?… We do not wish to abolish teaching and to make every man his own master, but if the curates will not teach the gospel, the layman must have the Scripture, and read it for himself, taking God for his teacher.

The Adrian Dominican Sisters are an international Congregation of 841 vowed women religious whose roots go back to St. Dominic in the 13th century. We are committed to preaching the Word of God, the formation of community centered on faith, and ministry to further the values of the Gospel among ourselves and in our world.

We minister in 30 states, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico and in four countries (Canada, the Dominican Republic, Italy and Swaziland). Responsive to the "signs of the times," we strive to address the needs of the world and to serve where we are called to go.

Our ministries have been developed from the traditional works of education, health care and social work. Our sisters serve in such ministries as education, administration, law, social work, health care, pastoral ministry, music, art and office work. Together, we continue the Dominican tradition of preaching through our prayer, study, ministry and common life.

More than 185 Associates (married and single men and women) share our journey in preaching the Good News of the Gospel and in bringing about change in our world.

Our main campus (Motherhouse) is in Adrian, Michigan, in the Diocese of Lansing. Located on this campus are the Congregation's administrative offices, Weber Retreat and Conference Center, and the Dominican Life Center (a continuum of care for members of the Congregation).

In 1971 the decision was made to admit men to the college, thus changing the campus culture forever. By the late 1980s, twenty-three undergraduate majors and two graduate programs were being offered. Nazareth College was also noted for its night and weekend classes designed to meet the needs working adult students. Off-campus programs were located at Glen Oaks Community College in Centerville, Lake Michigan College in Benton Harbor, and Kellogg Community College in Battle Creek.

The next major addition to the physical campus was the completion of the Athletic Center in 1989, though it was never truly finished. This provided the students with a much needed outlet for physical fitness and activities as well as contributing to the college sponsored varsity sports for men in soccer, basketball and baseball; and for women in volleyball, basketball and softball. It surly also contributed to the victory of the women’s volleyball team in 1991 at nationals.

The Nazareth College Board of Trustees announced their decision to close the college in April 1991. The college closed slowly and gracefully over the course of the next 18 months, allowing many students to finish their degrees. Ownership of the physical college campus reverted back to the Sisters of Saint Joseph. The Sisters wanted to find a purpose for the buildings that fit with their mission of service. Connors, Dooley and Albers Halls have been leased to Kalamazoo County Human Services Department. Borgess Hospital purchased the athletic center and has converted it into Borgess Health and Fitness Center. Unfortunately a purpose for the administration building and the library could not be found and they were torn down in 1995 and 1996, respectfully.

The college seal, that was inlaid in the main floor of the administration building, was saved and is now on display on the grounds of former campus. It is located on the west side of the main entrance road to Nazareth, close to where the administration building was.

In 1987 it offered bachelor degree programs in: accounting, America studies, biology, business administration, computer information management, elementary education, English, fine arts, fine arts management, human services, learning disabilities, liberal studies, medical technology, natural science, nursing, pharmaceutical and medical services representative, pre-medical pre-dental and pre-veterinary, secondary education, social psychology, and social work.

Nazareth College was a Catholic college in Kalamazoo, Michigan that operated from 1924 until 1992.

Under the auspices of the Most Reverend Michael James Gallagher, Bishop of Detroit, Nazareth College was chartered in 1924 at Nazareth, Michigan by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Nazareth. At that time the college was granted its Articles of Incorporation by the State of Michigan as a four year liberal arts college. Although the college traces its founding to this date, it is necessary to go back to 1897 to find the college’s roots.

Nazareth Academy opened in 1897 and based on the charter that was issued, it provided for the future extension of the school to the collegiate level. On May 7, 1913, Monsignor O’Brien announced the formation of the O’Brien scholarship and the opening of Nazareth College. In 1914, Margaret Packard became the first recipient of the O’Brien scholarship and Nazareth’s first graduate in 1918 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. Sister Mary Celestine Connors served as Acting Dean of the college from 1918 – 1932 when she became the college’s first President, a post she held until 1938.

A seven million dollar campus construction project was begun in the 1950’s. In 1959, groundbreaking began on Albers Hall, named after Bishop Joseph Albers of the Lansing Diocese. Also in 1959, construction began on Connors Hall. Originally named Immaculata Hall, it was renamed in honor of Sister Mary Celestine Connors. In 1962, the Administration building was begun closely followed by Dooley Hall in 1963. Dooley Hall was initially called Madonna Hall. The name change was to honor Dr. Thomas Dooley. He served in Laos during the Vietnam War and later returned to help the people there. He posthumously received a congressional goal medal for his humanitarian work in that country. Work on Dillon Hall and the library was completed in 1967.
