The Eternal Son of God -Chapter 22:~4-46 July 18 & 19, 2009
(-/"'
I. Matthew 22:34-40.
Here was an "expert" in the Mosaic Law testing Jesus. After Jesus had bested the Sadducees, the Pharisees wanted another shot at Him.
Their question was one often debated in their own circles and was thought to be extremely difficult.
Jesus' answer was taken from two texts:
Deuteronomy 6:5,
You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.
Leviticus 19:18b,
You shall love your neighbor as yourself; I am the LORD.
}>
The first part from Deuteronomy 6:5 was part of the Shema
(Hebrew for "hear") and was quoted by faithful Jews twice a day.
o Jesus is saying that the great commandment is what Moses gave; you recite it every day, and bind on your arms and foreheads.
o Loving God is not to be divided up into these component parts but rather to be all-inclusive or comprehensive. This love is intelligent, feeling, willing, and serving. It involves thought, intent, and action when appropriate.
o God requires more than»are belief.

o The Ten Commandments make clear that love for and obef.Uence to God are inseparable.
Exodus 20:5-6,
You shall not worship them or serve them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and the fourth generations of those who hate Me,..
,but showing lovingkindness to thousands, to those who. h:Jve Me\an~Jkeep My commandments.

}> The second part of Jesus' answer is from Leviticus 19:18.
Genuine love for one's neighbor is of the same kind as genuine love for God.
It is by choice purposeful, intentional, and activ~, not merely sentimental and emotional.

And this commandment we have fram Him, that the one who loves God
should love his brother also.
II. Matthew 22:41-46.
A question for His questioners.
Jesus' question seemed easy and they readily answered,
"The son of David."
It was a correct answer because many Old Testament passages taught that one of David's natural descendants would reign on his throne forever.
However, a divine Messiah was something they had never seenrQ.0r would accept.
Look at their response in Matthew 22:46. ; '\

» Jesus chose to quote from Psalm 110, which is quoted or referred to 27+ times in the New Testament.
See Psalm 110~
» Jesus' quotation, Ho~does David in the Spirit call Him "Lord"
(Adonai), saying, "The LORD

See Romans 1:1-4.
Was born indicates Jesus became man taking on a form of existence He did not have previously
-He became man through the Incarnation.
Was declared indicates He is and always has been God.
See Philippians 2:5-11.
Charles Spurgeon, "'The Lord said unto my Lord' is, "Jehovah said unto my Adonai." David in spirit heard the solemn voice of Jehovah speaking to the messiah from old.
From this secret and intimate communion spring the covenant of grace and all its marvelous arrangements.
"My Lord", reveals to us that Christ's glory does not diminish His nearness to us or His familiarity with us. Sitting on the throne as Lord,
He is yet "my Lord."

John MacArthur, Jr.,
"Jesus was declaring the Messiah's deity.
Under th~guidanceof /' the Holy Spirit, David had declared that God told the Messiah to 'sit at' His'

What is the significance of this to you?
If Jesus is the eternal Son of God and the Savior, what is your response to Him?
If He is, you should heed His call for your repentance and faith -it is the demand of the gospel-and follow Him. n l f ;1 ,A J

Conclusion:
I
John 3:16, For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.
I John 3:16,
We know love by this, that He laid down His life for us; and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.
Three great truths are seen here and are worthy of meditating on:
1.
How great my sins must have been if Christ lay down His life for me?
I must see my sin in the light of the Man hanging on the tree.
See His misery and think of the three hours of darkness as He bore the onslaught of all of Satan's power.
Think of what He said when the darkness lifted,
My God, My God, why did You forsake Me? Why did He suffer like this? Why was the lovingkindness of the Father withdrawn plunging our Lord into an ocean of grief?
The answer is that this was the price for satisfying the wrath of God for our sin.
2.
How great must be the Father's love for us.
3.
How safe we muStre. If He laid down His life for us, how safe we are.
